Description
The prostate is a gland located around the proximal part of the male urethra (the common duct for the urinary and genital systems in men). Due to various factors, it can suffer both acute and chronic inflammatory processes, and after a certain age, tissue transformations.
Sexual Function of the Prostate
The prostate plays two important roles in the ejaculation of healthy sperm. First, the sperm is enriched in the prostate by a special protein-rich fluid known as seminal fluid (80% Arginine).
Additionally, the sperm is ejaculated out of the penis due to contractions that occur in the prostate.
The prostate is also crucial in helping men during sexual activity because the nerves involved in the erection process pass alongside the gland, so damage to the prostate can negatively impact these nerves.
Enlargement of the Prostate
Approximately one in three men over the age of 50 will develop some degree of prostate enlargement. This medical condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
